Immediate Socioeconomic Impacts of Mindoro Oil Spill on Fisherfolk of Naujan, Philippines

In February 2023, an oil tanker carrying 5660 bbl of industrial fuel sank off Naujan in the Philippines, causing spill waters Oriental Mindoro and nearby provinces. The disaster affected fishing communities as well marine ecosystems including Verde Island Passage, which is at “center world’s biodiversity”. This study assessed immediate social economic impacts this on various coast. We conducted semi-structured interviews employed a narrative analysis to explore lived experiences fisherfolk after understand socioeconomic impacts. With prohibition other aquatic activities, participants lost up USD 1300 income per week from fishing. had no source due lack skills or opportunity for alternative livelihood community. While government provided food packs financial assistance, found these insufficient sustain their basic family needs food, utilities, education, health. Traces were also sources potable water affecting daily household activities. fisherfolk, who live that are vulnerable natural human-made hazards, subsistence, security, human well-being highly compromised. findings recommendations interventions mitigate future disasters, considering social, economic, ecological perspectives.
